Art and Design:

‘A high-quality art, craft and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. ’ (The National Curriculum 2013)

The aims of the art curriculum are to enable the children to develop their skills in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art and craft techniques.  The children are taught to evaluate and analyse art works and to develop their knowledge of the language of art. The children also learn about artists and designers and the historical and cultural development of art.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage (Reception) art and design activities are considered an important part of the learning environment which aims to enable each child to develop their own interests and skills.

From year 1, the national curriculum is followed. In Key Stage 1 the children are taught a range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape and form; using a range of materials.

In Key stage 2, the children use sketchbooks to record their ideas. The skills taught are progressive throughout the year groups, enabling the children to develop a range of techniques.
